Why use valves in an age where "newer" technology seems to have overtaken "older" technology? The technical reasons will be discussed in a moment. But the most obvious reason is simply the sound quality. In our digital age, the digital formats often sound cold and clinical. While this can in part be attributed to the nature of digital decoding and digital-analogue converters required in any digital playback machine, some of the blame also needs to be shared by some solid state designs.
While most "valve" products are really a combination of valve and solid state technology, the valve stage solves the digital domain's "edginess" by soothing the edges. This does not mean information is taken away or masked. It merely allows the source to be reproduced as intended.
